How can space exploration help the Earth?

In the late 1970, studies led by Gerard O’Neill proposed the construction of large space colonies, to be sited at lunar distance at the L4 and L5 points. The construction of these colonies, ultimately housing millions of people, could lead to solutions for some of the major problems down here on Earth.

Although it was shown that the colonies were possible using the technology of the time, the idea was brought down by the lack of suitable space infrastructure, notably the high cost and low launch rate of the Space Shuttle.

Now, with the advances in technology since the 1970s, and the development of launch vehicles such as Skylon, I believe it is timely to re-examine the studies and bring them up to date. I am therefore proposing a new BIS Study Project, but this will not just be an engineering project – the concept of the colonies covers a wide range of subjects, such as socio-economics, world politics and ecology, as well as the psychology of living in the colonies and the effects on the Earth. That gives the potential for this project to be far more inclusive to BIS members.

If you are interested in joining this project, or simply want to learn about the concept, then come to this presentation on a staggering aspect of mankind’s potential future in space.

Biography
Jerry Stone is a freelance presenter, broadcaster and author on astronomy and space exploration.  He runs Spaceflight UK (www.spaceflight-uk.com) and speaks all over the UK and abroad, at venues including the Edinburgh Festival, the Farnborough Air Show, the Royal Institution and the Palace of Westminster.  He also presents space workshops for schools, inspiring the next generation.

He is one of the few people who regularly speaks on space colonies, which has fascinated him since he met Gerard O’Neill almost 40 years ago and discussed these plans with him.
