Visions-of-Space-Bob-Parkinson-PictureFollowing our celebration of astronomical and space art in a number of articles this year, BIS members and the general public can now enjoy the opportunity this autumn to see first-hand the works of leading from the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) and BIS Fellows and Members from the UK. These will be featured in a major exhibition which is being organised by BIS South-West (Bath) in association with the Wells & Mendip Astronomers, a member society of the Federation of Astronomical Societies, in Somerset involved in public outreach and STEM education.

The exhibition, ‘Visions of Space’, will include works by BIS Fellow and former IAAA President David A Hardy and by former BIS President Bob Parkinson, MBE. We are also delighted to welcome well-known artists Dr Mark A Garlick, Richard Bizley, Gavin Mundy, Jackie Burns, Garry L Harwood and Nick Stevens, each of whom will be taking us on a unique and personal voyage of exploration in the show.

They will be presenting a diverse range of subjects, from our local solar system neighbourhood to distant exoplanets, from the adventure of manned space exploration to broader cosmic and philosophical themes. They also each bring their individual ways of interpreting space themes, from the figurative to the surreal, from paintings in oil and acrylics to detailed digital creations, and displaying different techniques.

The show will also feature a US section, with a selection of prints by a number of well-known US artists, including Apollo astronaut Alan Bean and planetary scientist William K Hartmann, as well as information displays on the development and history of astronomical art.

The exhibition will take place at the Wells and Mendip Museum, in the heart of the historic city, at 8 Cathedral Green, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2UE. It will run from Saturday 7th to Saturday 21st November 2015, and will be open to all from 11.00am to 4.00pm every day (closed only on Sundays). Entry to the show is free of charge. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase works by our British artists – originals, prints, giclees or cards – at any time during the exhibition, should they wish to do so.

For BIS members a limited number of places will be available for a preview of the exhibition on the evening of Friday 6th November. There are only 20 tickets available which are available at £8 per person (limit of 2 tickets per member). The ticket allows you entry to a lecture on ‘Artists in Space’ by David A Hardy, wine and canapes, a free exhibition catalogue and the chance to meet some of the participating artists.  To book your tickets please click here.

We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be a unique and beautiful event!
