The BIS has made significant changes to its outlook and working methods in the last few years, all with the aim of making the Society much more attractive. We are increasing our focus on the Members, improved ways to participate, and have concentrated on giving better value for your subscription.

The BIS website is now at the centre of communications, keeping everyone fully in touch with the Society and its activities. We have added Odyssey e-newsletter to our output with its exciting focus on hard science fiction and the imaginative aspect of space exploration, and also with Society news. Your contribution, however small, will be acknowledged by letter and with your name entered in a ‘roll of appreciation’. We are a registered charity so please do consider making donations by Giftaid (for UK resident taxpayers), which increases the amount we receive. The Society is almost entirely funded by Members and Fellows, so we really do need your support.

Thank you.
Colin Philp FBIS, Council Member.

If you are a UK taxpayer, the value of your gift can be increased by 25% under the Gift Aid scheme at no extra cost to you. This means every £1.00 could be worth £1.25 to us, and it doesn’t cost you a penny!

You must pay an amount of UK Income tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each year (6 April one year to 5 April the next) that is at least equal to the tax that the British Interplanetary Society and any other charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) you support will reclaim on your donations for that tax year (Council tax and VAT do not count). The British Interplanetary Society will claim 25p in tax for every £1 gift aided.

If you are a UK taxpayer and want the British Interplanetary Society to treat as Gift Aid donations all qualifying payments made today, in the past four years and/or from this date of this declaration please change the Gift Aid box below.

By changing the Gift Aid box, I confirm that I am a UK taxpayer and want the British Interplanetary Society to treat as Gift Aid donations, all qualifying payments made today, in the past four years and/or all donations I make from the date of this declaration until I notify you otherwise (select appropriate action below).

The Technical/Education Appeal

The Technical/Education Appeal

£0.00

The first ‘Technical Target’ has yet to be announced as work continues apace on the Sprite chipsats for the Kicksat programme, which was funded by a number of members following an appeal in 2010, and is due for launch later this year.  So Council has decided, as its first target, to raise £5,000 for some up-to-date display and demonstration models that can be used for both educational purposes and for display at conferences, exhibitions and media interviews.

The Society is grateful for the many generous gifts of models of past projects or programmes, like Inmarsat 4, HOTOL, Olympus, Skylark and Mustard.  All have been widely used, but to excite the younger generation, maintain their interest in STEM subjects and encourage visionary thinking, more futuristic models like Skylon, Daedalus/Icarus and perhaps even World Ships should be added.  Fortunately we have access to the original Daedalus model and a new one is on the way, but new ideas and models are always welcome.

Thank you.
Richard Osborne FBIS, Council Member.
