Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Helen Sharman’s mission to Mir

21-22 May 2016

During 18-26 May 2016, the 25th anniversary of the first British citizen to fly in space will be celebrated. During that week, in 1991, Helen Sharman participated in a visiting mission to the Soviet space station Mir. As part of 25th anniversary activities the BIS will be holding its 36th annual Soviet/Chinese Technical Forum during the weekend of 21-22 May 2016.

Since January 1980 the BIS Technical Forum has featured a wide ranging agenda of presentation, films and debates on the history, activities and future plans of both the Russian and Chinese space programmes. One of the most popular and long running events in the Society calendar over 60 individual speakers have presented more than 290 papers over a 35 year period.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Helen Sharman’s Mission to Mir, the 2016 Soviet/Chinese Technical Forum will be spread over the weekend of 21-22 May, with a varied and exciting programme. The event starts on Saturday 21st May, with a selection of presentations and a Cosmonaut Q&A; the day is rounded off by a conference dinner (Fully Booked) in the evening at The Kia Oval (Pakistan Room). Sunday 22nd May continues with more presentations and a panel including Helen Sharman, ending mid-afternoon.
