The Centenary Memorial Plaque unveiling in memory of Arthur C. Clarke

Minehead Middle School unveiling Arthur C Clarke plaqueThe Centenary Memorial Plaque unveiling by the Mayor of Minehead, Mrs Jean Parbrook and Anthony Knight at Minehead Middle School, in memory of Arthur C. Clarke, who was born in Minehead on 16th December 1917. Anthony had been fundraising for a Centenary Memorial Plaque in memory of Arthur C. Clarke, who was born at 13 Blenheim Road, Minehead. He and 11 of his friends put on a cake sale at MMS towards the plaque. He got a Blue Peter Silver Badge for his efforts.

The background is an iphone wallpaper showing the Monolith from ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. This reflects Arthur C. Clarke’s lifelong interest in space travel; his genius as one of the best science fiction writers of all time; and his groundbreaking proposal for the Geostationary Communications Satellite in 1945.

The plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of Minehead, Mrs Jean Parbrook, and Anthony Knight on Tuesday 27th June in the main office at Minehead Middle School.
The Plaque was made by Fine Memorials of Bridgwater who generously donated the polished black granite slate free of charge.

Paul, Anthony’s father contacted the BIS back in March asking if Tim Peake could unveil the plaque and we forwarded his request to Tim at ESA.  Tim couldn’t make the unveiling but sent a signed poster to the school which was a very kind gesture and showed his support of the efforts of Anthony, his friends and the school.
