Apollo 10 – Dress Rehearsal for the Moon Landing, by Jerry Stone FBIS

Speaker: Jerry Stone
Date: 22nd May 2019
Start Time: 19:00
End Time: 20:30
Venue: BIS, 27/29 South Lambeth Road, Vauxhall, London, SW8 1SZ

We continue to approach the 50th anniversary of the most incredible achievement – landing the first men on the Moon.  Apollo 11 wasn’t the only flight, so Jerry Stone is giving a presentation about every Apollo mission on its own 50th anniversary, going right through to December 2022, the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 17.  Join us for the fourth talk in this series.

The pace of the Apollo missions continued with the testing of the Lunar Module in Earth Orbit.  Now everything was ready for a final test – this time in Lunar Orbit.  Apollo 10 would be a dress rehearsal for a manned landing – carrying out every step except for actually reaching the surface of the Moon.  One of the reasons for going so close yet not landing was because there were still unknowns that needed to be resolved, though as it turned out, the flight was also subject to human error, leading to a hair-raising ride just a few miles above the Moon.
