David Angus, as a planetary modeller, loves following the exploration of planets and moons in this solar system and asking the question: what might other worlds be like in this part of the galaxy? Join him as we leave Earth and travel past the Moon, Mars and the moons of the gas giants; on our way out of this solar system to explore the ‘ExoEarths’ beyond that might orbit neighbouring stars.  David has imagined and modelled a number of them and is keen to discuss them and his modelling methods.

About the Speaker:

When he was 12 years old David pledged that he would, in his working life, follow his own interests which included science fiction, space exploration, maps and geography.  In the 1980s, after initial successes working on a documentary about the Special Operations Executive for the BBC and the planet ‘Helliconia’ for Science Fiction author Brian Aldiss, he joined forces with a competitor to work on an atlas.

Promotional work on a globe model of Lower Cretaceous Earth, now in the Isle of Wight’s ‘Dinosaur Isle Museum’, led to him building a 42″ diameter globe of present-day Earth which is now in the Royal Geographical Society.  Further work has involved the Science Photo Library, Mars, Terraformed Mars for the Adler Planetarium of Chicago, a planet for a worldbuilding group, terrain models of gas giant moons in collaboration with the Art Director of Startrek and ‘exoEarths’, including ‘Greenworld’ for Earth Sciences author Dougal Dixon.  David has travelled through 43 countries and their scenery has often inspired him in his work.
