The WSW2022 theme is ‘SPACE and SUSTAINABILITY’ It has been shown that Sustainable Development Goals are positively impacted by the benefits stemming from Earth Observation and Global Navigation System applications. Out of the 169 targets associated with the SDGs, at least 65 (almost 40 per cent) directly benefit from using EO and GNSS services- either helping monitor the status of achievement of a given SDG or actively contributing to its fulfilment. This number is even higher when we include the benefits of space technologies on telecommunications. At the same time, Earth’s orbital environment is a limited resource that itself needs to be protected. By ensuring the long-term sustainability of outer space activities, we not only guarantee humanity’s increasing presence in space but we contribute to our socio-economic betterment, as well as the lives of all mankind on Earth.
