Jerry Stone, a Fellow and Council Member of the Society ran a Technical Project at the BIS for many years – “To review and update the design of Island One” – which was a large-scale space habitat proposal from the 1970s.
Called The SPACE Project – Study Project Advancing Colony Engineering – it was written up in two special issues of the BIS Journal (JBIS), and attracted considerable interest.
Also developed from this project was a small-scale habitat which would allow the medical studies required for people living under less than 1g. This was designated Island Zero. Uniquely, this could provide various g-levels – simultaneously!
Jerry has recently made some amendments to the design which will improve its efficiency, and has received from the US a strong message of support for the concept
He reassures his audience that “you do not need to know anything about space habitats in advance, as everything will be clearly explained.”
This is an event for World Space week, as the theme for 2025 is “Living In Space”.
