The BIS will again be supporting the Armchair Astronaut, whose next event features former NASA astronaut, test pilot, and engineer Doug Hurley.
Doug Hurley is a veteran American astronaut, retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel, and former military test pilot whose career spans the closing chapter of the Space Shuttle programme and the beginning of commercial human spaceflight. Selected by NASA in 2000, he flew three missions and spent approximately 93 days in space. He piloted STS-127 aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2009 and STS-135 aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2011—the final mission of NASA’s Space Shuttle programme.
In 2020, Hurley commanded SpaceX Crew Dragon Demo-2, the first crewed orbital test flight of the Crew Dragon spacecraft and the first human spaceflight to launch from American soil since the final Shuttle mission. Flying with fellow NASA astronaut Bob Behnken, he helped inaugurate a new era of commercially provided crew transport to the International Space Station. Doug’s rare perspective, from piloting the final Shuttle flight to commanding the first crewed Crew Dragon mission, makes him a compelling guide to the past, present, and future of human spaceflight.
