Asgardia – the first new Space Nation

Lembit Opik will be speaking about Asgardia, the Space Nation which aims to unite people in a transnational, equal and progressive society to build a new home for humanity in space and protect its cradle — planet Earth. It will facilitate the first human childbirth in space which is a crucial step on the path to immortality as a species and to achieve its scientific goals and build a society of the future, it is creating a fully-fledged independent digital state recognized by earthly nations. Asgardia aims to ensure peaceful space exploration, protect its home planet from cosmic threats and lead the development of new Space Law to eliminate militarization of space. Biography

Lembit Opik graduated with a degree in Philosophy from Bristol University in 1988. He joined Proctor and Gamble and was promoted to Global Human Resources Training Manager in 1996. He was elected to the Liberal Democrats’ Federal Executive Committee in 1991 and elected as a Councillor on Newcastle City Council in 1992. At the 1997 general election Öpik successfully stood as the Lib Dem candidate. He retained the seat at the 2001 and 2005 general elections, but lost his seat to the Conservatives at the 2010 general election. Öpik served as the Liberal Democrat spokesman on education (1997), Northern Ireland (1997–2007), Wales (2001–07), business (2007), and housing (2007–08). During the 2001–05 Parliament, Öpik was a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee in the House of Commons. He became leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats in 200 and stood down in 2007.

In 2012 Opik joined a human resources consulting firm, Leadenhall Consulting and, as a keen motorcyclist and a long-time supporter of the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK), he joined MAG as director of communications and public affairs in 2013. He has become a regular presenter on local radio and hosts a news show on TV. Following “The birth of the new space nation Asgardia” on 12 October 2016, Öpik was elected Chairman of the self-proclaimed and unrecognised parliament of the micronation Asgardia on 24 June 2018 in Vienna and re-elected 25 August 2023.
