Abstract:

Past President, Professor Bob Parkinson, will be launching the updated version of his ever-popular book ‘Interplanetary – The History of the British Interplanetary Society’ which records the personalities, events and activities of the Society from 1933 up to and including 2020. Bob will no doubt explain the trials and tribulations of gathering the vast quantities of information and the difficulties in updating, correcting and adding material on personalities and activities prior to 2009 when the first issue went to print.

Printed copies of this latest edition in both hardback and paperback will be available for purchase in person on the evening of the event for signing.

Biography

Bob is currently a Visiting Professor at Queen Mary University London and Cranfield University where he lectures on Space Propulsion and System Engineering. He gained his doctorate in 1965 from the University of Nottingham and has worked for the Rocket Propulsion Establishment, PERME, British Aerospace, Matra Marconi Space and Astrium, where he worked on many projects including the HOTOL air-breathing spaceplane, which he co-originated with Dr Alan Bond.
Dr Parkinson has published numerous papers addressing aspects of advanced aerospace projects; including subjects as diverse as space tethers, space tourism, and reusable launch vehicle architectures. He has had papers published in Spaceflight and JBIS and he also worked on the Society’s Project Daedalus and Project Boreas. He is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and was awarded an MBE in the 2002 New Years Honours List.


Bob joined the Society in 1956 and was elected to Fellow in 1967. He served on the Council from 1968 -1971, 1975-1978 and 1982 to 1985. He was BIS President from 2009 – 2012. He would like to encourage the BIS to continue being an advocate for enthusiastic development of future developments in astronautics.
