SKYRORA Secures First UK Launch Licence

The British Interplanetary Society congratulates on this outstanding achievement.

Skyrora, the British rocket and space technology company, has been granted a launch operator licence by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray MP, has described this feat as “a massive boost to the whole of Scotland and the wider UK’s space sector”.

This will enable the Scotland-based business to launch its SkyLark L suborbital vehicle from SaxaVord in Unst, making it the first British company to manufacture and launch a rocket into space from the UK. In 2021, Skyrora signed an MoU with SaxaVord, the UK’s licensed spaceport, with the goal of achieving up to 16 launches per year by 2030.

SkyLark L FACTS:

  • The vehicle is 11 meters tall, with a payload mass of 50 kilograms.
  • Components of SkyLark L were produced in the UK using Skyrora’s Skyprint 2, the largest hybrid 3D printer of its kind in Europe.
  • SkyLark L is powered by a clean-burning 30kN bipropellant engine and can reach 3.5x the speed of sound.
