World Space Week UK: CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

WORLD SPACE WEEK UK NATIONAL COORDINATOR

World Space Week UK: Volunteer Roles

Are you passionate about space exploration and eager to contribute to a worldwide — and especially UK-wide — celebration of science and technology in space? Every year from 4–10 October, the world unites for World Space Week, the United Nations–declared celebration of space science and technology and their role in improving life on Earth, commemorating both the launch of Sputnik and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty. Coordinated globally by the UN and the World Space Week Association, the British Interplanetary Society (BIS) proudly coordinates and champions World Space Week across the UK.

We are now building a volunteer team to help make each year’s UK celebration impactful, engaging, and well-supported. If you are enthusiastic and committed to taking on a key volunteering role — including Regional Ambassador positions across the UK — we’d be delighted to welcome you on board.

By joining our team, you’ll play a vital part in celebrating World Space Week, bringing this year’s theme, Space and Climate Change, to life, and helping to inspire and connect communities across the country — this year and in the years to come.

Volunteering Vacancies

Regional Ambassadors (Northern England, South East England, South West England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland)
Represent World Space Week in your region by promoting local activities, supporting organisers, and building connections with schools, universities, museums, community groups, venues and more. You may also build and coordinate a small local volunteer team to amplify reach and engagement, and collate regional participation metrics (e.g, number of events, attendance, and highlights) to report to the UK National Coordinator at BIS for submission to the World Space Week Association each year, helping demonstrate the UK’s contribution to this global celebration.

Events Lead
Plan and coordinate a variety of activities during World Space Week — from talks, competitions and exhibitions to workshops and stargazing nights — all aligned to the annual theme. You may also have the chance to build and guide a team of event volunteers to ensure smooth delivery.

Outreach Lead

Drive awareness and participation by leading our promotional efforts through social media, partnerships, press, and community outreach. This role offers the opportunity to also develop a small team of content creators and partner liaisons to expand our reach.

Metrics & Registration Lead
Support organisers in registering and updating their events on the official WSW platform, while tracking and compiling UK-wide participation data. You can create a small support team to gather event details, analyse engagement, and report key figures to the National Coordinator.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in any of the above roles or becoming a Regional Ambassador, please email worldspaceweek@bis-space.com by 31 August 2025. Include your CV and a brief statement explaining why you’d be a good fit for the role of your choosing. Join us in delivering a celebration that inspires, connects, and engages communities across the country — and help shape a stronger, more connected World Space Week in the UK.
