World Space Week UK

The BIS is the official UK National Co-ordinating Body for World Space Week, the British Interplanetary Society supports and encourages everyone to create educational opportunities, activities, and events during World Space Week.

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10.

World Space Week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association (WSWA). The WSWA leads a global team of National Coordinators, who promote the celebration of World Space Week within their own countries.

World Space Week runs annually between 4-10 OCTOBER

World Space Week 2026 will celebrate the theme of Rocket Revolution

Rocket Revolution focuses on the rapid transformation of space launch. Once limited to a small number of government programs, access to space is now expanding through commercial launch providers, reusable rockets, university teams, startups, and new national space actors. This shift is changing who can reach space, how often launches happen, and what space is used for.

A Week Focused on Access and Momentum

World Space Week 2026 will spotlight how launch capabilities are evolving and what that means for science, education, industry, and society. Activities around the world will explore topics such as reusable launch systems, small launch vehicles, launch infrastructure, safety, regulation, and the growing role of private and academic actors in reaching orbit.

The week offers a global moment to examine how launch innovation is accelerating space activity and reshaping participation across regions and generations.

The Launch Point for Global Collaboration

WSW 2026 provides a shared platform for engineers, educators, students, policymakers, and space enthusiasts to exchange ideas around launch technologies and space access. WSWA welcomes collaboration through webinars, educational resources, partner-led content, and other cooperative formats. Participants are invited to contribute expertise, research, and perspectives that reflect how the rocket revolution is unfolding worldwide.

Join us by Launching Your Rocket

Event organizers are encouraged to interpret “Rocket Revolution” in ways that fit their communities. Activities may include lectures, design challenges, student projects, simulations, historical retrospectives, or discussions on the future of launch. Events can be technical or introductory, large or small, formal or creative.

Get Involved

WSWUK invites individuals and organizations everywhere to take part in World Space Week 2026. By organizing events, participating in programs, sharing knowledge, or supporting the Association, you help highlight how access to space is changing and why launch matters. Together, we mark a defining chapter in space activity and the continuing evolution of how humanity reaches beyond Earth.

World Space Week runs between 4-10 October every year.

These dates commemorate two significant space-related events in history:

October 4, 1957
Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration

October 10, 1967
The date the ‘Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies’ (or ‘The Outer Space Treaty’) entered into force.

(NB: The Outer Space Treaty was opened for signature by the three depository Governments (the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States of America) in January 1967, and it entered into force on 10 October 1967.)
