THE FUTURE OF UK HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT SYMPOSIUM

– CALL FOR PAPERS – Deadline 15 July 2022

Globally human spaceflight is at a turning point; the ISS is coming to the end of its life, there is a new initiative to return humans to the Moon and a recent proposal to develop a European autonomous human spaceflight capability. With these points in mind, it is timely to look at the history and future of the UK involvement in human spaceflight, concentrating on its role in the context of the overall Government’s space policy vision to “build one of the most innovative and attractive space economies in the world.” Decisions that are made now will impact the UK’s position and opportunities for decades to come.

In the past human spaceflight has concentrated on science applications and more intangible soft societal goals, and these have proved of very limited interest to past UK governments. However, any human spaceflight policy will need to also consider the future commercial applications that will require a human presence, including public access, space resource utilisation and large-scale industrial activity.
